Strains held in culture collections are pivotal for comparative purposes in current taxonomic, phylogenetic or metabolomic studies of prokaryotes in general, and cyanobacteria in particular. The microbiological Biological Resources Centres (mBRCs) are collections of microorganisms cultures, which ensure their ex situ preservation and may provide access to information related to the microbial diversity (e.g. living strains or strain DNA) or to data related to these microorganisms (e.g. classification, cultivation conditions, ecophysiological characteristics, biotechnological applications etc.).
The MicroAlgae and Cyanobacteria Culture Collection (TAU-MAC) was created by Dr. Spyros Gkelis and it is maintained in CyanoLab (Department of Botany, School of Biology, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki).
TAU-MAC includes approximately 200 strains strains isolated from freshwaters, marine sites, salt-works, terrestrial and marine caves, lagoons, marine sponges, and hot-springs of Greece and other countries (Estonia, Iceland, Spain, Tajikistan) and aims to contribute in the biodiversity knowledge on microalgae.

Cyanolab continues its sampling campaigns, so this collection is renewed with the addition of new strains.
